When Nagios is the right call
If you have engineering capacity and unusual requirements, Nagios is hard to argue against. The plugin ecosystem means a check exists for almost anything, event handlers give you free-form auto-remediation, and text-file configuration means your entire monitoring setup can live in git. None of that costs a licence rupee on Core.
Fully on-premise and air-gapped environments are also Nagios territory. Infronest is a cloud platform; a network that cannot reach the internet needs self-hosted monitoring, and Nagios has served exactly that niche for decades.
The switch makes sense when the person who built your Nagios setup is a single point of failure, when config maintenance competes with product work, or when Nagios is one of four or five tools — monitoring, helpdesk, asset register, patching — each holding a partial copy of the truth. That is the consolidation case, and it is the only case we argue.
The real cost comparison: licence versus engineering time
The Nagios Core licence costs nothing, but running it does: initial setup, plugin selection and testing, config maintenance as the estate changes, upgrades, and the on-call knowledge to debug the monitoring system itself. Teams that track this honestly usually find monitoring maintenance consumes a steady slice of an engineer — which is fine if that is a deliberate choice, and expensive if it is an accident.
Infronest inverts the model: the subscription fee is the visible cost, and the engineering time largely disappears because hosting, checks and the UI are maintained for you. Neither model is universally better. Put your team’s hourly cost against the subscription price and your list of separately paid tools, and the answer for your organisation falls out of the arithmetic.
Security & compliance considerations
Audit-ready reporting is where file-based monitoring shows its age: proving to an auditor what was monitored, what alerted and what was done about it usually means assembling evidence by hand. Nagios is really two products. Nagios Core is free, open-source software — the licence costs nothing and the real cost is the engineering time to install, configure and maintain it. Nagios XI is the commercial product: its pricing page lists a free tier up to 7 nodes or 100 services, a Standard edition from $2,595 (100 nodes) to $14,995 (1,000 nodes), and an Enterprise edition from $4,690 to $17,090 — one-time licence purchases, with annual maintenance and support renewals required to keep certain premium features.
Infronest is a subscription: a flat platform fee of ₹29,999, ₹49,999 or ₹94,999+ per month that covers monitoring alongside helpdesk, IT assets, patching and the rest of the 17 modules, with device management as a per-user add-on.
The honest comparison is not licence-vs-licence. Core’s licence is free and XI’s is a one-time purchase, while Infronest is a recurring fee that includes hosting, maintenance and the surrounding IT tooling. Price the engineering hours your team spends running Nagios — and the other tools you pay for separately — and compute against your own numbers.
Migrating from Nagios to Infronest
Two honest warnings before any Nagios migration plan. First, historical performance data does not migrate: years of RRD graphs and availability history stay behind, so archive the reports you need before you switch anything off. Second, your check and alert logic does not port — host and service definitions, escalations and event handlers are Nagios config objects, and in Infronest they are rebuilt, not imported. Plan the rebuild as the core of the project.
Take stock of your plugins before committing. Standard checks — host up/down, disk, CPU, memory, services, HTTP endpoints, SNMP devices — map cleanly onto Infronest’s built-in server, network and website monitoring. But if you depend on obscure or custom Nagios plugins, verify each one has an equivalent first; a genuinely custom check may be a reason to keep a small Nagios instance for that corner of the estate, and it is better to know that on day one.
- Inventory your hosts, services and contacts from the Nagios configuration files — this is the build sheet for the new system and the record of what monitoring existed.
- Classify your checks: standard checks that map to Infronest built-ins, and custom plugins that need an equivalent verified (or a decision to retain them in Nagios).
- Add servers via the Infronest agent (Windows/Linux) and network devices via SNMP, and confirm the basic up/down and resource checks match what Nagios watched.
- Rebuild notification and escalation rules deliberately — recreate only the alerts someone acts on, and leave years of accumulated alert noise behind.
- Parallel-run for two to four weeks and compare alert parity on real incidents before trusting the new system alone.
- Archive historical availability and performance reports from Nagios — metric history does not migrate — then decommission the Nagios server (or shrink it to any retained custom checks).
What you lose by switching
Nagios has survived 25 years for good reasons, and leaving it has real costs. Weigh these before you commit:
- The plugin ecosystem. Nagios Exchange hosts thousands of community-built plugins and add-ons; if a check exists for some obscure device or protocol, it probably exists for Nagios. Infronest ships built-in checks, not an open plugin marketplace.
- Zero licence cost and full control. Nagios Core is free, runs on your own hardware, and works in air-gapped or fully on-premise networks. Infronest is a paid cloud service.
